Acetonitrile Monitoring

Screenshot (3)Used in many laboratories, Acetonitrile is not likely to be new to you. However, the potential ill effects of inhalation or over exposure may be.
The HSE EH40 guidelines recommend an 8 hour exposure not to exceed 40ppm and an exposure over a 15 minute period no more than 60ppm.
Ill effects of Acetonitrile are understood to be the following; the substance is toxic to blood, kidneys, lungs, liver, mucus membranes, gastrointestinal tract, upper respiratory tract, skin, eyes, central nervous system (CNS).
The substance may be toxic to the reproductive system. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can target organ damage.
Repeated exposure to a highly toxic material may produce general deterioration of health by an accummulation in one or many human organs.
As documented in the HSE document MDHS 96, it is advised to use sorbent tubes to determine the concentration of VOC’s present in your laboratory including Acetonitrile.
